Is your son stuggling in gemara, mishayos, chumash or kriah?
ADHD or short attention span?
All children are excited to begin gemara. As the year progresses, though, a child can have trouble keeping up with the unfamiliar language of the gemara and being able to follow the gemara’s arguments. The problem becomes compounded in each new grade, as the class starts learning Rashi and Tosfos. He can’t read a piece of gemara clearly, let alone Rashi and Tosfos.
As we know, success in the younger grades of yeshiva is a strong factor that will shape a boy in his teen years. Furthermore, his ability in gemara will be a key factor in deciding his mesivta options.
Let Talmid Tutor help your child! Sessions are done over Zoom. We use the engaging, Mercava online gemara. The layout is identical to the gemara your son uses in school, with some added features.
On the side of the gemara, we break down the gemara into English, in short, simple steps.
He will first read the steps, and then read the gemara inside. Each phrase of the gemara is highlighted. He will be shown how the steps fit into the gemara he is reading. As we move along, we’ll reinforce unfamiliar words and build his gemara vocabulary. If needed, nekudos will be added to the text. We’ll review each section of gemara several times until your son is comfortable reading it. Then we’ll move on to the next piece. We’ll do the same for Rashi and Tosfos.
Our way of learning is especially effective for boys with ADHD, or who have a short attention span. Their rebbe can spend fifteen minutes or more explaining the gemara, but after five minutes, he has lost them. Our method works for these boys, because, rather than struggling to hold their attention, we let them lead the session by having them read the steps of the gemara and then read the gemara inside. They feel like they are learning the gemara on their own. We help them along, making sure they get it. Before long, they will be reading the gemara smoothly.
Pre-teaching the gemara can be a tremendous aid to enable your son to come prepared to school and be able to follow along the day's gemara lesson. He can raise his hand, answer questions, take part in class discussions - what a dream!
Your son will feel good about himself as his success builds on itself. Our goal, once your son becomes familiar with the method, is for him to start teaching us the gemara, be’ezras Hashem, in a relatively short time.
Whether your son is in the younger grades, mesivta/high school, or beis medrash, if he needs help with gemara, he's come to the right place. At Talmid Tutor, we’ll tailor his sessions to the pace that's right for him.
Let your child become a pro in gemara. Or, in our language, give him the tools to become a talmid chacham!
